Abiquiu became Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home and artistic base.
O'Keeffe bought and restored a nineteenth-century adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, after years of being drawn to the region’s landscape. The property included a famous wall and door that she repeatedly represented in paintings, turning an architectural detail into a powerful subject.
Abiquiu is in northern New Mexico, roughly northwest of Santa Fe. O'Keeffe’s presence there helped make the surrounding landscape central to her public identity, although she also maintained important connections with Ghost Ranch and other places in the state.
The village should not be confused with Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in 1997. Abiquiu refers to the community and home associated with her daily life and work, while Santa Fe is the nearby city associated with the later museum.
