Georgia O'Keeffe's restored adobe home and studio are in Abiquiu, New Mexico. She acquired the neglected property in 1945 and spent years arranging its rooms, courtyard, garden, and distinctive black door.
The Abiquiu house became both a residence and a working environment. Its views of the surrounding landscape, including the wall and door that O'Keeffe painted repeatedly, fed directly into her art. She moved there permanently from New York in 1949, after Alfred Stieglitz's death.
Abiquiu is distinct from Santa Fe and Ghost Ranch. O'Keeffe painted throughout northern New Mexico, but the Abiquiu house is particularly identified with her daily life and studio practice. The property is now preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
