Which New Mexico town was home to Georgia O'Keeffe's principal residence and studio from 1949?

The story behind the answer

Abiquiú was home to Georgia O'Keeffe’s principal residence and studio from 1949.

O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, and she acquired the historic Abiquiú house in 1945 after years of trying to obtain it. She renovated the property and began living there year-round in 1949.

The house includes the courtyard and black door that appear in several of her paintings. Its simple architecture, surrounding cliffs, and carefully framed views became part of her daily visual environment and artistic practice.

Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Santa Fe, where O'Keeffe also lived and where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located. Her Abiquiú home and studio are about 60 miles north of Santa Fe and are preserved as a National Trust Historic Site.
