Which New Mexico town became Georgia O'Keeffe's permanent home after 1949?

The story behind the answer

Abiquiu became Georgia O'Keeffe's permanent New Mexico home after 1949.

O'Keeffe moved into a simple adobe house in Abiquiu in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. The property had a walled patio and a distinctive door that became a recurring subject in her paintings. She had admired the structure for years before obtaining it and transformed the house into both a residence and a working environment.

Abiquiu lies in northern New Mexico, north of Santa Fe. O'Keeffe also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, a dramatic area farther north, and used both places as sources for paintings and drawings. Abiquiu was especially important as her settled base during the later decades of her life.

The town is sometimes confused with Santa Fe because the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is in Santa Fe and many visitors begin their O'Keeffe travels there. However, Santa Fe was not her permanent residential home. The Abiquiu house is preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio, a National Historic Landmark open through guided tours.
