Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe’s New Mexico home in her later years.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned regularly from 1929 onward. She was drawn to the region’s stark landscapes, architecture, bones, and changing light, which became central subjects in her work.
She bought a house in Abiquiú in 1945 and spent years restoring it. The house and its surrounding landscape became closely associated with her mature artistic life. She also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, farther north in New Mexico.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Taos, another important New Mexico art center, or with Santa Fe, where O'Keeffe died. Her Abiquiú house is now preserved as a historic site, while the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located in Santa Fe.
