Abiquiú became Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio base in New Mexico. She acquired and restored a historic adobe house there, and the surrounding landscape supplied subjects for many of her later paintings.
O’Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly. In 1945 she bought the Abiquiú property now known as the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio, completing its restoration in the late 1940s. The house’s courtyard wall and nearby landscape became recurring motifs.
Abiquiú is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location associated with O’Keeffe, and from Santa Fe, where she later lived and where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is located. These places are nearby in the broad cultural geography of northern New Mexico but are not interchangeable.
