Which New Mexico site was the subject of Georgia O'Keeffe's painting Ranchos Church, New Mexico?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's painting Ranchos Church, New Mexico depicts San Francisco de Asís Mission Church.

The historic mission church stands in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Built in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it is one of the best-known adobe churches in the American Southwest and became a major subject for both O'Keeffe and photographer Paul Strand.

O'Keeffe painted the building’s massive adobe forms from different viewpoints. Her interest focused on the church as an arrangement of light, shadow, wall, and geometric volume rather than as a conventional architectural illustration.

The church is also commonly called the Ranchos de Taos Church. That informal name can create confusion with other Spanish colonial churches in New Mexico. Its formal dedication is to Saint Francis of Assisi, and the building remains a landmark of New Mexican architecture.
