Ghost Ranch supplied the name for one of Georgia O'Keeffe's homes and studios near Abiquiú.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area in northern New Mexico known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and broad desert views. O'Keeffe began spending summers there in the 1930s and rented a house on the property. The landscape became a repeated subject in her paintings and drawings.
Her Ghost Ranch surroundings helped shape works based on bones, hills, and sharply defined geological forms. She also maintained a home in the nearby village of Abiquiú, where she later lived and worked more consistently. The two places are related but are not the same location.
Visitors sometimes use Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch interchangeably when discussing O'Keeffe. Abiquiú was her village home, while Ghost Ranch was the larger landscape and retreat that provided another important base for her New Mexico work.
