Which New Mexico site inspired many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of cliffs and bones?

The story behind the answer

Ghost Ranch inspired many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of cliffs and bones.

Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O’Keeffe began spending time there after her first New Mexico visit in 1929, and its red cliffs, broad skies, and isolated forms became recurring subjects in her work.

She painted the area’s landscape in simplified, highly structured compositions rather than attempting conventional topographic records. Animal bones collected during walks also became important motifs. Works such as Ranchos Church and paintings of pelvic bones show how she transformed found objects and local scenery into monumental images.

Ghost Ranch and O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home are related but distinct places. She lived and worked at both, while the nearby village of Abiquiú became the location of her permanent home. The contrast between the two sites is a frequent source of confusion.
