Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings of a white ranch house and red hills.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and education center near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. Its dramatic cliffs, mesas, and vivid colors became recurring subjects in O'Keeffe's work after she began visiting the area in the late 1920s.
One of her best-known groups of paintings depicts the ranch's landscape and buildings, including the white ranch house set against the surrounding terrain. O'Keeffe described the place as a source of visual forms that she could return to repeatedly and reinterpret.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are related but not identical locations. O'Keeffe maintained a home and studio at Abiquiú, while Ghost Ranch was a separate landscape farther north. Both places are central to her New Mexico story, but the red hills and ranch-house imagery are especially associated with Ghost Ranch.
