Which New Mexico site gave Georgia O'Keeffe its famous name, “White Place”?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe called Plaza Blanca the “White Place.”

Plaza Blanca is a group of pale, eroded cliffs near Abiquiú, New Mexico. O'Keeffe painted and drew the formations repeatedly, responding to their chalky surfaces, sharply cut forms, and changing light. Her nickname for the site reflects the visual impression made by its white rock.

The location is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico setting strongly connected with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch is known for multicolored cliffs and the nearby Cerro Pedernal, while Plaza Blanca is especially associated with the “White Place” description. O'Keeffe's landscapes were not straightforward topographic records; she simplified and enlarged forms to create concentrated compositions.
