Which New Mexico site did Georgia O'Keeffe call the White Place?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe called Plaza Blanca in New Mexico the White Place.

Plaza Blanca is a group of pale, eroded rock formations near Abiquiú. O'Keeffe painted and drew the site repeatedly, attracted by its stark white cliffs, sculptural shapes, and changing desert light. She used the personal name “the White Place” for this landscape.

The name is easy to mix up with the Black Place, another New Mexico landscape that she depicted extensively. Ghost Ranch is also closely associated with O'Keeffe, but it is a different location and was known for its dramatic red and multicolored cliffs.

O'Keeffe's private names for landscapes show how personally she understood place. Rather than treating the formations as generic scenery, she returned to particular sites and explored their forms through repeated compositions. Plaza Blanca therefore has both a geographic identity and a distinctive place in her artistic vocabulary.
