Georgia O'Keeffe made Abiquiú her New Mexico home from 1949. She lived and worked in the Abiquiú house that became one of the most recognizable places connected with her career.
The property included an adobe house and studio, and its surrounding landscape supplied subjects for paintings. O'Keeffe was especially interested in the architecture, walls, doors, cliffs, and broad vistas of northern New Mexico. The home gave her a stable base after years of traveling between New York and the Southwest.
Abiquiú is not the same place as Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location closely associated with O'Keeffe. She owned a house at Ghost Ranch as well, but the Abiquiú home became her principal residence after 1949. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site and is associated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
