Georgia O'Keeffe repeatedly painted Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and landscape area near Abiquiú, known for dramatic cliffs, mesas, and vivid color. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and found its large-scale formations especially compelling. She later rented and then acquired a house there, using the surrounding landscape as a major source for paintings.
Her series of Ghost Ranch subjects includes cliffs, roads, bones, and distant hills. The site’s isolated appearance helped shape the public image of O'Keeffe as an artist of the American Southwest.
Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú house and studio. She lived and worked in both settings, but the two properties are separate and are often mentioned together in accounts of her New Mexico years.
