Ghost Ranch became one of Georgia O'Keeffe's most painted landscapes.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and education center near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and began spending extended periods there, responding to its cliffs, bones, trees, and broad desert spaces.
She later acquired a house at Ghost Ranch and used the surrounding terrain as a major source of subjects. Works associated with the area include paintings of the red hills and the prominent Cerro Pedernal, a mesa she painted repeatedly.
Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home. She maintained connections to both locations, but Ghost Ranch is especially identified with the dramatic landscapes that became central to her mature New Mexico imagery.
