Which New Mexico site became Georgia O'Keeffe’s longtime home and artistic base after 1949?

The story behind the answer

Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe’s longtime New Mexico home and artistic base after 1949.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly for decades. In 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz’s death, she moved permanently from New York to New Mexico. She eventually acquired and restored a house in the village of Abiquiú.

The Abiquiú house, especially its courtyard wall and door, appeared repeatedly in her paintings. The property provided a private place to work and a close connection to the high-desert environment that had fascinated her since her first visits.

Abiquiú is often confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location strongly associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a retreat and source of subjects, while the Abiquiú house became her principal permanent home.
