Which New Mexico site became especially associated with Georgia O'Keeffe's landscape paintings?

The story behind the answer

Ghost Ranch became especially associated with Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico landscape paintings.

O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and returned repeatedly, painting its cliffs, mesas, and broad desert spaces. The ranch lies near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico, a region whose light, geological forms, and sparse vegetation became central to her mature work.

Her paintings of the landscape do not function as ordinary topographical records. She often simplified or enlarged forms, turning bones, hills, and architectural structures into powerful compositions. Ghost Ranch is therefore both a real place and an important source of visual motifs in her art.

O'Keeffe later owned a house in nearby Abiquiu, but Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu are not the same location. That distinction matters because both names appear frequently in accounts of her New Mexico years.
