Abiquiú was home to Georgia O'Keeffe's later residence and studio. She acquired and restored a historic adobe house there, making it one of the places most closely associated with her mature work.
The house included a famous walled garden and a black door that O'Keeffe painted repeatedly. The surrounding landscape, architecture, and controlled views from the property became recurring subjects and visual sources.
O'Keeffe also spent time at Ghost Ranch, farther north in New Mexico. Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch are sometimes confused because both were central to her life and art, but they are distinct places. The Abiquiú home is now preserved and managed by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
