Which New Mexico settlement was home to Georgia O'Keeffe's historic adobe house?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's historic adobe house was in Abiquiú, New Mexico.

O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiú in 1945 and began restoring it with help from architect Juan Hamilton. She moved into the home in 1949, using it as both a residence and a studio. The property included a distinctive courtyard wall and a black door that became recurring subjects in her paintings.

The house gave O'Keeffe a settled base near the landscapes she had painted for years. Its architecture, garden, and views were not merely background details; she repeatedly studied and transformed them into simplified visual motifs.

Her Abiquiú home is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place strongly associated with her. O'Keeffe spent time at Ghost Ranch earlier, while Abiquiú became her principal home in the later part of her life.
