Abiquiú contains Georgia O'Keeffe’s historic home and studio.
O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú home, in northern New Mexico, became her principal residence and working environment after she moved permanently to the state in 1949. The property includes an adobe house and studio that she adapted with architect Juan Hamilton during the later part of her life.
Its most recognizable feature is a door opening onto a courtyard wall, a subject O'Keeffe painted repeatedly. The door and surrounding adobe architecture show how she transformed an ordinary feature of the house into a sustained study of shape, light, and repetition.
The Abiquiú property is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place closely associated with her paintings and travels. O'Keeffe owned a house at Ghost Ranch as well, but the preserved historic home and studio commonly identified by this name are in Abiquiú.
