Ghost Ranch supplied Georgia O'Keeffe with many landscape subjects in northern New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and later rented a house there before buying one. She was drawn to the dramatic red cliffs, mesas, and open spaces, which became recurring motifs in her paintings and photographs.
Ghost Ranch lies near Abiquiú in Rio Arriba County. Its colorful formations, especially the cliffs known as the Piedra Lumbre, helped create the visual language associated with O'Keeffe’s New Mexico period.
The ranch is sometimes confused with her Abiquiú home, but they were separate places. O'Keeffe eventually purchased and restored a house in Abiquiú, while Ghost Ranch remained another important base and source of inspiration.
