Which New Mexico ranch became one of Georgia O'Keeffe's most famous painting locations?

The story behind the answer

Ghost Ranch became one of Georgia O'Keeffe's most famous painting locations in New Mexico.

The retreat lies near Abiquiú in the dramatic Piedra Lumbre basin, a landscape of cliffs, mesas, and vivid geological colors. O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and returned repeatedly, finding subjects that supported her increasingly independent visual language.

She painted the surrounding terrain in works featuring cliffs, bones, roads, and expansive skies. One recurring landmark was the Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain that she painted many times. O'Keeffe famously described it as her private mountain, saying she could paint it until it became part of her.

Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's separate Abiquiú home and studio. Both places mattered to her, but Ghost Ranch was the larger landscape retreat that supplied many of her iconic Southwestern motifs.
