Which New Mexico ranch became Georgia O'Keeffe's summer home in 1940?
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Ghost Ranch became Georgia O'Keeffe's summer home in 1940.
O'Keeffe first visited Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico during the 1930s and later acquired a house there. From 1940 onward, the ranch became one of her principal places to live and work during the summer. Its dramatic cliffs, badlands, and broad skies supplied subjects for many paintings.
Ghost Ranch is near Abiquiú and is known for its distinctive geological formations. O'Keeffe often walked through the surrounding landscape, selecting particular views and natural objects for repeated study. The area became so closely associated with her that visitors often connect its red cliffs and open spaces with her mature work.
Ghost Ranch was not the same as her Abiquiú house, which she purchased later and used as another important home. The two places are relatively close in northern New Mexico, but they represent separate residences and settings in her life.
