Ghost Ranch became Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home after she bought a house there in 1940.
The property lies near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico, amid dramatic cliffs, mesas, and desert colors. O'Keeffe had visited the area since the 1930s and repeatedly used its landscapes as subjects.
She owned a house at Ghost Ranch and later acquired a separate home in the village of Abiquiu. These places gave her sustained access to the terrain that shaped much of her later work.
Ghost Ranch is not the same as Abiquiu, although the two locations are closely connected in accounts of O'Keeffe's life. The ranch is a broad property; Abiquiu is the nearby village and site of her restored adobe home.
