Which New Mexico ranch became a major inspiration for Georgia O'Keeffe?
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Ghost Ranch became a major inspiration for Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and repeatedly painted its dramatic cliffs, mesas, bones, and broad skies. The landscape lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico and is known for the multicolored formations of the Chama Valley.
She rented a small house at Ghost Ranch and used the surrounding terrain as a sustained source of subjects. Her paintings of the landscape helped make the region visually recognizable to audiences far beyond New Mexico. She also painted nearby Pedernal Mountain many times, calling it her private mountain.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home. They are related but distinct places: Ghost Ranch was a landscape and retreat area, while O'Keeffe later acquired a historic house in Abiquiú. Both locations were central to her New Mexico years and to the simplified forms of her later work.
