Which New Mexico property did Georgia O'Keeffe buy in 1940?
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Georgia O'Keeffe bought Ghost Ranch in New Mexico in 1940.
Ghost Ranch, near Abiquiú, had attracted O’Keeffe for years because of its dramatic cliffs, high desert colors, and expansive skies. She first visited the area in the 1930s and used its landscape as a recurring subject.
The property became one of the most important places in her life and work. She painted distinctive formations such as the cliffs near her house and repeatedly returned to the region’s bones, hills, roads, and ranch structures.
O’Keeffe also maintained a home in the village of Abiquiú, which she acquired later. Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are therefore closely related but are not the same property. Ghost Ranch refers to the larger rural landscape and ranch area north of Abiquiú.
