Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe's principal New Mexico home from 1949.
O'Keeffe rented a house at Abiquiú for many years before purchasing it in 1945. She had the building renovated and moved there permanently in 1949, making it one of the most important places in her artistic life.
The house and its surrounding landscape supplied recurring subjects, including adobe walls, doors, courtyards, trees, and distant mountains. O'Keeffe also kept a studio at the property, where she worked during the later decades of her career.
Abiquiú is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location strongly associated with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was farther north and served as a landscape source and seasonal retreat, while the Abiquiú home became her year-round base. The house is now preserved as a historic site.
