Which New Mexico property became Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio near Abiquiu?
Answer
Abiquiu house
Answer
Abiquiu house
Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio near Abiquiu was the Abiquiu house.
O'Keeffe discovered the abandoned adobe compound during the 1930s and began painting its distinctive courtyard wall and door. She purchased the property in 1945 and spent years restoring it with help from architect Juan Hamilton and local workers.
The house became more than a residence. Its courtyard, black door, adobe walls, and views of the surrounding landscape appeared repeatedly in her paintings. O'Keeffe used the building as a retreat and working environment after moving permanently to New Mexico in the 1980s.
The Abiquiu house is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place strongly associated with O'Keeffe. She owned a house at Ghost Ranch as well, but the Abiquiu property is the preserved home and studio most directly identified by that name. The National Trust for Historic Preservation now manages it as a historic site.
