Ghost Ranch became Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home and inspired many paintings of its cliffs.
O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s after traveling through northern New Mexico. Its broad, colorful formations and isolated landscape appealed to her, and she rented a house there for extended periods. Paintings such as Ranchos Church, New Mexico and works depicting the cliffs around the ranch reflect her sustained attention to the region.
Ghost Ranch lies near Abiquiú in Rio Arriba County. O'Keeffe later acquired a house in Abiquiú, which gave her a more private and practical base. The two locations are related but not interchangeable: Ghost Ranch was her remote landscape retreat, while the Abiquiú house became another major home and studio.
Taos Pueblo and White Sands are also important New Mexico sites, but neither is the answer to this question.
