Which New Mexico location was a major home and subject for Georgia O'Keeffe?
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Answer
Ghost Ranch
Ghost Ranch was a major home and subject for Georgia O'Keeffe.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and education center near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe began spending summers there in the 1930s, attracted by its dramatic cliffs, wide skies, and intensely colored terrain.
She painted many works based on the surrounding landscape, including formations she called the Red Hills and the Black Place. Her paintings did not simply document the scenery; they isolated and enlarged selected shapes so that geology became an abstract visual structure.
O'Keeffe later maintained a home in nearby Abiquiú, which gave her a more private year-round base. Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú are therefore related but not interchangeable: Ghost Ranch was the dramatic landscape setting, while Abiquiú became her principal permanent residence.
