Ghost Ranch inspired many Georgia O'Keeffe paintings and became one of her New Mexico homes. The dramatic ranch lies near Abiquiú, amid colorful cliffs and high desert landscapes in northern New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first encountered the area during her New Mexico visits and later rented a house there. Its cliffs, mesas, roads, trees, and changing light became recurring subjects. She often worked directly from the landscape, then transformed what she saw through cropping, simplification, and unusual scale.
Ghost Ranch is distinct from O'Keeffe's permanent home and studio in the village of Abiquiú. Both places were important, but Ghost Ranch is especially associated with the red and yellow cliffs that appear in several of her paintings. The property is now a retreat and education center operated by the Presbyterian Church.
