Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O'Keeffe's repeated paintings of a New Mexico landscape.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and former ranch near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in the 1930s and found its cliffs, mesas, desert colors, and immense sky especially compelling.
She painted the surrounding landscape many times, often simplifying geological forms into bold areas of color and shape. The ranch became one of the most recognizable places associated with her work, alongside her home and studio in nearby Abiquiu.
O'Keeffe's paintings of Ghost Ranch were not conventional topographical records. She selected and reorganized what she saw, sometimes isolating a ridge or wall so that the landscape became almost abstract. Her repeated return to the same sites shows how observation, memory, and artistic transformation worked together in her New Mexico paintings.
