Ghost Ranch gave Georgia O'Keeffe the red hills seen in many of her New Mexico paintings. The ranch is a scenic area near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico, known for dramatic cliffs and colorful geological formations.
O'Keeffe began visiting Ghost Ranch in the 1930s and later described the region as one of the places where she felt most at home. She painted its cliffs, mesas, and broad skies repeatedly, reducing the landscape to bold shapes and concentrated bands of color.
Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home. She eventually acquired a house in Abiquiú, while Ghost Ranch remained an important nearby source of imagery. The ranch also became widely known through films, museums, and its connection with paleontology and religious retreat programs.
