Georgia O'Keeffe used her Abiquiú property as a home and studio from 1949.
She purchased and restored a traditional adobe house in the village of Abiquiú, New Mexico, after renting a nearby house for years. The property included a distinctive courtyard wall and a door that O'Keeffe repeatedly depicted in paintings.
Abiquiú became one of her principal working environments. Its architecture, surrounding cliffs, hills, and high-desert light provided subjects for paintings as well as a setting for her daily practice. She also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, farther north in New Mexico.
The name is sometimes confused with Santa Fe because O'Keeffe's museum is in Santa Fe and she died there. Abiquiú refers specifically to the village and the home-and-studio property associated with her later career.
