She rented a house at Ghost Ranch for many summers and eventually acquired a separate home in nearby Abiquiu. Paintings associated with the area include views of cliffs, ranch buildings, animal bones, and the distant Pedernal mountain.
Ghost Ranch and Taos are both important New Mexico destinations, but they are not interchangeable. O'Keeffe worked in several parts of the state, including the Abiquiu region, and her paintings often transformed specific natural forms into simplified, highly concentrated compositions.
