Abiquiú became Georgia O'Keeffe's primary New Mexico home from 1949.
O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946. In 1949 she settled at an adobe house in the village of Abiquiú, where she lived and worked for much of the rest of her life.
The house had a walled garden, a studio, and a distinctive black door that became an important recurring subject in her paintings. The surrounding mesas, cliffs, and dry landscape also supplied imagery for many of her works.
O'Keeffe maintained another home at Ghost Ranch, farther north in New Mexico. Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch are therefore related but different places: Abiquiú was her principal village home, while Ghost Ranch was a major source of landscape inspiration and a place where she also lived.
