Abiquiu became Georgia O'Keeffe's long-term home and studio in New Mexico.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly before making the state her principal home. In 1945 she purchased an adobe house in the village of Abiquiu, then spent years renovating it. She moved into the restored house in 1949.
The property included a high adobe wall and a distinctive door, both of which appear in several of her paintings. The Abiquiu house offered a quieter setting than New York and placed her close to the landscapes, cliffs, and architecture that became central subjects in her later work.
Her Ghost Ranch residence, farther north, is another major O'Keeffe location and a common source of confusion. The Abiquiu Home and Studio is now preserved as a National Trust for Historic Preservation site and can be visited by reservation.
