Ghost Ranch inspired many Georgia O'Keeffe paintings after her first visit there in 1934.
O'Keeffe first visited Ghost Ranch in 1934 and returned often. The dramatic red and yellow cliffs, broad skies, and isolated geological formations became central subjects in her New Mexico work. She painted the surrounding landscape from several viewpoints and often simplified its forms into powerful bands of color.
Ghost Ranch lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico. It is a distinct site from the village of Abiquiú, where O'Keeffe later established a permanent home. Keeping those places separate helps explain her working pattern: she painted across the surrounding region rather than from one single studio location.
O'Keeffe’s paintings of the area include views of cliffs and hills that she rendered with different colors and compositions. The landscape remains strongly associated with her, but it was not her birthplace and was not the name of her New Mexico home.
