Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of New Mexico’s red hills and dramatic landscapes.
O’Keeffe began visiting the area in 1934 and later maintained a house there. The retreat, officially known as the Piedra Lumbre Ranch, lies near Abiquiú in northern New Mexico and is known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and wide desert views.
She repeatedly painted the landscape around Ghost Ranch, including the large red-and-yellow formations she could see from her home. The setting became one of the clearest visual signatures of her New Mexico period.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with Abiquiú because both places shaped O’Keeffe’s life and work. They are separate locations, however. Abiquiú was her permanent home from 1949, while Ghost Ranch was the remote landscape retreat where she lived and worked for periods.
