Which New Mexico landscape landmark did Georgia O'Keeffe call her private mountain?
Answer
Cerro Pedernal
Answer
Cerro Pedernal
Georgia O'Keeffe called Cerro Pedernal her private mountain. The flat-topped peak in northern New Mexico appeared repeatedly in her paintings after she began visiting and living in the region.
O'Keeffe viewed the mountain from her home near Abiquiu and used it as a recurring visual anchor. Its isolated profile made it especially suitable for her practice of reducing landscapes to strong shapes, horizons, and blocks of color.
Cerro Pedernal is part of the Jemez Mountains and rises to about 9,862 feet. O'Keeffe famously joked that God told her if she painted the mountain enough, she could have it. Her ashes were scattered from its summit after her death.
