Ghost Ranch inspired Georgia O'Keeffe’s landscape paintings and series associated with the ranch in northern New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area near Abiquiú, known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and expansive desert views. O'Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and returned repeatedly, finding subjects in its distinctive geology and open spaces.
Her paintings of the region include views of cliffs and the nearby Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain that she famously revisited in many works. Ghost Ranch became one of the most recognizable geographical settings in her art.
Ghost Ranch is not the same place as O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú home, although the two locations are closely connected in her New Mexico life. The ranch’s landscape also has a long history as a retreat and educational center.
