Georgia O'Keeffe purchased and restored the Abiquiu house in 1945 as a home and studio.
The property stood in the village of Abiquiu, New Mexico, and included a walled compound with an iconic black door opening onto a courtyard. O'Keeffe had seen the house during earlier visits and was attracted to its architecture and setting, but the building was in poor condition when she acquired it.
She worked with assistants and contractors to restore the structure, adapting it to her needs as a living and working place. The house became one of the most recognizable physical settings associated with her art, alongside Ghost Ranch and her Santa Fe residence.
The Abiquiu house is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also owned a home and painted extensively. They are separate properties in northern New Mexico. The Abiquiu property is now preserved as a historic site connected with her life and work.
