Georgia O'Keeffe purchased the Abiquiú house in 1945 and made it her permanent home in 1949.
The property was a ruined adobe hacienda in the village of Abiquiú, New Mexico. O'Keeffe saw it from the road for years before acquiring it, and she later worked with contractors to restore the building while preserving important architectural features.
The house included a distinctive walled courtyard and a door that became a recurring subject in her paintings. Its rooms and surrounding landscape also provided a practical setting for living, working, and displaying objects she collected.
O'Keeffe had previously spent substantial time at Ghost Ranch, which is a separate location. The Abiquiú house became especially important in her later life and is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
