Which New Mexico house did Georgia O’Keeffe make her principal home?
Answer
Abiquiú house
Answer
Abiquiú house
Georgia O’Keeffe made her Abiquiú house her principal home.
O’Keeffe purchased the abandoned adobe compound in Abiquiú, New Mexico, in 1945 and spent years having it restored. She moved into the house in 1949, after the death of Alfred Stieglitz, and it became one of the most important physical settings of her later life.
The property included a famous black door set in an adobe wall. O’Keeffe repeatedly painted and photographed this architectural feature, transforming an ordinary entrance into a carefully composed modernist subject. The house also provided a base for her work in the surrounding landscape.
The Abiquiú house should not be confused with her house at Ghost Ranch, which she acquired in 1940. O’Keeffe kept both connections, but the Abiquiú property became her principal home and is now preserved as the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio.
