Georgia O’Keeffe acquired the Abiquiú house in 1945 and used it as a home and studio.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio is in the village of Abiquiú, New Mexico. O’Keeffe purchased the property in 1945 after renting it for years, and she renovated the adobe house into a place suited to living and working. The property includes the famous courtyard wall and door that became subjects in several paintings.
O’Keeffe spent much of her later life between Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch. The two locations are related but not interchangeable: Ghost Ranch was a separate rural landscape and retreat, while the Abiquiú house was her carefully adapted residence and studio. The house offered both privacy and access to the northern New Mexico scenery that shaped her mature work.
The property is now preserved as a historic site associated with the artist. Its rooms, furnishings, garden, and architectural details help explain how ordinary structures and views became recurring elements in O’Keeffe’s paintings.
