Which New Mexico house became Georgia O'Keeffe’s home and studio in 1949?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú home became her home and studio in 1949.

O'Keeffe acquired and restored a house in the village of Abiquiú, New Mexico, and used it as a residence and working studio from 1949 onward. The property had originally been part of a Spanish colonial compound and had stood abandoned before restoration.

The house’s architecture became closely connected with O'Keeffe’s art. She repeatedly painted features such as a door in an adobe wall, turning an ordinary architectural detail into a carefully studied subject. The surrounding landscape also offered the cliffs, hills, and broad views that appear throughout her later work.

The Abiquiú home is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico place strongly associated with O'Keeffe. She spent substantial time at Ghost Ranch, but the Abiquiú property was her principal home and studio after 1949. It is now preserved and managed as a historic site.
