The Abiquiú house became closely associated with Georgia O'Keeffe after she bought it in 1945. The property, located in Abiquiú, New Mexico, had been abandoned and required extensive restoration before it became a home and studio.
O'Keeffe was particularly fascinated by the courtyard wall and door at the property. She painted the door repeatedly, turning an architectural detail into a major subject. The house provided a more settled base than her earlier arrangement at Ghost Ranch, although both places remained important to her work.
The Abiquiú house is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, the retreat north of Abiquiú where O'Keeffe also lived and painted. Ghost Ranch was a landscape and residence associated with her New Mexico years, while the Abiquiú property became her principal home. The site is now preserved as part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's historic properties.
