Which New Mexico home and studio did Georgia O'Keeffe preserve as a working residence?
Answer
Abiquiu Home and Studio
Answer
Abiquiu Home and Studio
The Abiquiu Home and Studio was Georgia O'Keeffe’s preserved New Mexico residence and workplace.
O'Keeffe began renting the Abiquiu property in 1945 and purchased it in 1949. The adobe compound had been neglected before she restored it, and she continued using it as a home and studio for much of the later part of her life.
The property is especially associated with a distinctive door opening onto a courtyard wall. O'Keeffe painted that architectural feature repeatedly, treating it as a subject of shape, light, and abstraction. The house also provided a base from which she worked on landscapes around Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch.
The Abiquiu Home and Studio is not the same as Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and painted. It is managed by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and is available for guided visits, subject to access arrangements and preservation requirements.
