Abiquiu is the New Mexico community associated with Georgia O'Keeffe's famous home and studio. She purchased the abandoned adobe compound in 1945 and spent years restoring it.
The property became O'Keeffe's principal home after she moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. Its architecture and surroundings appear repeatedly in accounts of her life and work, especially the distinctive black door in a courtyard wall.
O'Keeffe's Abiquiu house was not merely a residence. It provided a private working environment and embodied her interest in stark shapes, walls, doors, and the relationship between built forms and the surrounding landscape. The site is now preserved and managed as a historic property.
Abiquiu is often confused with Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location strongly connected with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was north of Abiquiu and supplied many subjects for her paintings, while the famous restored home and studio are in the village of Abiquiu itself. Santa Fe, meanwhile, houses the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
