Abiquiú became Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio location in 1949.
O’Keeffe moved permanently to Abiquiú in 1949 after spending years visiting and working in New Mexico. She lived and worked in a historic adobe house there, whose courtyard wall and door became subjects in several paintings. The Abiquiú setting remained important to her practice for decades.
Abiquiú is often confused with Ghost Ranch, a nearby area that O’Keeffe also painted extensively, and with Santa Fe, where she maintained another home and where her museum later opened. These places are connected but not interchangeable: Abiquiú was the community of her home and studio, Ghost Ranch supplied dramatic landscapes, and Santa Fe became a major cultural center associated with her legacy.
